How To: Prepare For A Natural Disaster

I’ve been diligent over the years teaching my kids about how to deal with emergencies when it comes to dialing 911 and also home fires but this past year revealed my lack in preparing them for a natural disaster.

Like many parents who watched the devastation of Hurricane Sandy it didn’t cross my mind that in these modern times we’d be so drastically affected by a storm or earthquake.  Ignorant yes, but not too late to get on track.  I’m launching a series on how to prepare for emergencies, in specific natural disasters.  You’ll find the posts in my Parent Stuff – Kid Safety section of the website.

Each post will give recommendations for regional disasters and also links to experts providing great advice and family friendly information.

Part 1 – How to create a basic family emergency kit

Part 2 – How to create a family plan

Part 3 – How to prepare for family pets in an emergency and customize your kit

Part 4 – How to maintain the emergency kit and plan

Check back weekly to see the latest post and feel free to weigh in on your experience and add tips or advice.
