Yum! Summer Berry Picking

We had a great afternoon of berry picking with the kids. The sweet smell of perfectly ripe berries was in the air, the sun was out and the bugs were at bay – it was a perfect berry picking day!

We love going to a nearby farm about 20 minutes outside of Vancouver. Located at 2727 Westham Island Road in Ladner, British Columbia, the farm is a quick drive from Vancouver down Highway 99.

The farm is called Emma Lea Farms and they have seasonal berry picking starting in June. Their website is full of great info telling you which berries are in season so you can plan the visit to your favorite berry type.

The farm is very family friendly and you’ll see lots of kids running around with parents and grandparents chatting and picking. Everyone has a great time.

My kids love being outdoors and Sofia even wore her farm hat. I love that the kids can see how food grows and appreciate, maybe for a second, how food gets to their table. On our list today were raspberries and blueberries. We had a pleasant run in with some strawberries too so those made it home with us as well.

The fields go on forever and the kids can putter around finding their own row to pick as they decide which area is more bountiful.

We love the big fat blueberries and there are a steady stream of happy shouts as a new ripe branch of berries is discovered.

After finishing up, weighing and paying you can relax and hang out at the playground and have some ice cream with, what else, but berries!

Once we get home we wash and store the berries in the fridge and also freeze a few batches as well. I may even try some of these berry recipes from Martha Stewart’s Summer Bucket List….unless we eat them all in the next few days!
